Is It True That Coca-Cola Is Bad for You?

The sugar in Coke is called fructose. It is not the same as glucose, a simple sugar found in many foods that your metabolism breaks down quickly and easily to make energy. Fructose is not easily broken down. Instead, it is broken down in the liver, which changes how your body makes fat. If you eat too much fructose at once, your body will turn it into fat and store it. A 12-ounce can of Coke has 140 grams of sugar, which is just 10 grams less than the recommended amount of added sugar for the whole day. There is no fiber in Coke, so that sugar is absorbed quickly. Fructose makes up more than half of that sugar, and most of it gets stored as fat.

Coca-Cola, like many other sugary sodas, can make you more likely to get sick in the long run. If you drink one 12-ounce can of Coke, you are 33% more likely to die from heart disease. If you drink two, your chance of getting diabetes could go up by as much as a quarter. The fructose in Coke makes your body store fat, which ends up in your blood vessels. This makes you more likely to get hypertension or high blood pressure.

The same thing happens to your teeth. Coke is very acidic, and this acidity wears away at the enamel that protects your teeth. The bacteria that live in your mouth also love the sugar in Coke. They will keep growing, and so will the acidic waste they produce, which will damage the lining of your teeth even more.

Lastly, the brown color of Coke comes from a substance called caramel color. Even though this coloring agent is still very controversial, studies on rats have shown that it causes cancer.
